AFF Diary - Level 3

Sat was a no jumper, the sun was out but the winds were up. So being sensible we headed to the local at about 3.30pm, not the best idea in the world, crawling home around 11pm.

Sunday looked much better, up early, feeling terrible and got my name on the manifest.

The aim of jump level 3 was - 1 practice pull and then just be let go by the instructors, keeping stable and enjoying the ride.  Got a coffee and chatted to a few people, one of which had just come back from Spain, where they completed their AFF course - I was informed they failed level 3 and this compounded my feeling of illness. Then another chat and someone else told me they failed it as well. hmm. great.

I got called, then kitted up, I was sweating at this stage and feeling terrible. Once in the plane words cannot describe how petrified I was. For the first time in my life
i really didn't want to do something, I considered getting out. Na can't do that, but i wanted to.

A 30 minute flight up to 10k with a lot of breathing by me and occasionally farting from other people on the plane, and I really felt awful. My instructor asks - are you ready to skydive - I say yes but mean no, not at all. I just wanted to be home with my wife and cats :)

The door opened, I shuffled over, and fear left me - check in, check out, up, down - arch, sweet.  I was flying again, feeling great, heading, altitude, check left - thumbs up, check right - extend legs.  Practice pull went well, during it I noticed for the first time that the altitude was 9500ft, so things must move quickly - I had no idea. Checked altitude and relaxed. I noticed around then that I had been let go and was flying on my own for the first time, ah joy, I got a few 'extend legs' signals, felt good, started turning slightly to my left (which I discovered on the ground was because I was moving my left arm slightly when checking my alti), I strangely opted to turn more to the left to correct this for some reason and got a gentle push back from Ronin, all good, bit more flying, bit more relaxing, then lock on @ 6000ft. 5000ft wave, wave, arch reach pull.

My canopy opened with a ruddy big twist in it - arse, the twist was growing/moving up the line, I considered if it could be a malfunction, tried like buggery to kick it out - success. Ah relax. Although I thought this must have been due to a poor arch when pulling, it seems like it was more likely to have been a minor packing error.

The canopy ride down was interesting, it was windy at that stage and forward movement was pretty much nil. Got my first bit of real turbulence and had a few seconds thinking to myself hmm, if this went wrong at this height i would need to be swift, etc. 

Still landed on my feet, happy as a big happy thing, and confident that I will never have the same irrational fear again. Even if I do, I'll be better prepared to deal with it.

De-brief went well, only thing I was not okay on was my up, down, arch bit of the exit - although I got the exit quick. I think it must just have been my fear levels getting the better of me - as it’s pretty much the easiest thing on the todo list.

Next level = level 4, meaning I passed, and in the future only have 1 instructor, which makes it a bit easier to get done. yay.

The sad note was Timmy didn't manage to get his level 3 jump done, as 1 of our instructors felt quite sick after my jump, needed to snooze for a couple of hours and the winds had picked up by the time he was feeling better, which made me feel kinda bad the whole way home, oops.
